Drink more tea to resist the adverse effects of smog
You endure the pain of breathing in the smog in the north, but what can I do in the bright sunshine in the south? Let’s give you some valuable information! In addition to wearing masks and buying air purifiers, there is another way to reduce the damage of smog to the human body, and that is - drinking tea!
According to a 2014 report from the China Social Science Network, Yu Guanting, vice president of the Wu Juenong Tea Thought Research Association, pointed out at the "13th March 8th Gathering and Drinking More Tea to Prevent Smog and Haze Seminar" that smog is mainly harmful to people's lungs, throats and eyes. It is recommended to drink more tea that clears heat, soothes the throat and improves eyesight to resist the adverse effects of smog. Han Chi, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, explained that drinking tea can effectively resist the damage caused by haze to the human body from the perspective of the mechanism of tea drinking in preventing three types of chronic diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. She believes that sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and inhalable particulate matter are the main components of smog, and drinking tea can improve the body's antioxidant capacity. From this aspect, drinking tea can reduce the harm of smog to the human body.
Smog directly poisons the lungs. The best way to prevent smog is to protect the lungs. To prevent disease, we must improve the self-cleaning function of our lungs, such as paying more attention to clearing, moistening, and nourishing the lungs in our daily diet. Yang Qingming, chief physician of the 304th Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, also pointed out in a guest interview on China News Network's "News Talk" that increasing exercise appropriately and drinking more tea and eating more fruits are important measures to effectively prevent and control smog. On days when haze is severe, drinking a cup of hot tea before going out every day can not only effectively replenish the water needed by the human body, but also effectively reduce the damage caused by haze to the human body.

The 2000 edition of "Chinese Tea Dictionary" edited by Mr. Chen Zongmao pointed out that tea has a variety of comprehensive health effects, among which those related to haze include:
Exciting and Refreshing activity
Haze weather can easily make people drowsy, and the caffeine in tea can stimulate the central nervous system, put the cerebral cortex into an excited state, eliminate fatigue, and increase vitality. In addition, drinking tea can add lactic acid produced during human metabolism and excrete it from the body, which can eliminate fatigue.
Anti-allergic activity (Antianaphylaxis activity)
Smog weather can be described as a nightmare for people with allergies. Various particulate matter in smog can easily cause allergies, and may also induce serious diseases such as asthma. Hyaluronidase in the human body has the function of releasing histamine from mast cells, and histamine increases capillary permeability and causes smooth muscle contraction, which can easily cause red blisters and allergies. The catechin compounds in tea can inhibit the activity of hyaluronidase to a certain extent, thus suppressing allergic symptoms in a series. Note that fermented tea is most effective, so ripe Pu'er tea is a good choice for people with allergies.
Detoxicating activity
Smog contains a variety of toxic substances, and may even contain excessive amounts of heavy metals. The polyphenolic compounds in tea can combine with some of them and be excreted from the body through the diuretic effect of caffeine. Catechins can even precipitate heavy metals and alkaloids in the body. The sulfur compounds in tea also have a detoxifying effect on some arsenic and mercury salts.(Editor: Li Mengqi)
