Sipping fruit tea can cause tooth decay
Scientists from King's College London, UK, have discovered that sipping acidic drinks such as fruit tea can corrode teeth and cause damage to tooth enamel.
Researchers found that drinking acidic drinks or holding them in the mouth for too long without swallowing increases the risk of acid erosion of teeth, and snacking makes the situation worse.
Beverages such as wine, fruit tea, fruit pulp drinks, sugar-free soft drinks and sugar-added drinks are all acidic drinks, while plain water, tea, coffee, milk and sparkling water are not acidic drinks. Researchers found that drinking plain water with a slice of lemon between meals or drinking fruity hot tea twice a day increased the risk of tooth decay by 11 times; drinking the above drinks with meals increased the risk of tooth decay by 5.5 times.
Ruse Ladava, chairman of the Health and Science Committee of the British Dental Association, recommends drinking more water, milk and other beverages, or eating foods such as cheese to neutralize acidic beverages or acidic foods. You can also drink acidic beverages in large gulps or with a straw to avoid excessive contact between acid and teeth.
